African Pain Policy Fellowship (APPF)
The African Pain Policy Fellowship (APPF) represented the first time the International Pain Policy Fellowship (IPPF) was continent-specific. Up until then, Fellows were selected from all regions of the world. With the APPF cohort, all Fellows were from the continent of Africa and was administered through a collaborating arrangement with the continent-based African Palliative Care Association (APCA). While the overall principles, program, and outcomes were essentially the same as the “traditional” IPPF, the APPF represented the first time that staff, faculty, mentors, government officials, and Fellows met on their continent (as versus University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA) for the action-planning portion of the program. While mentors and staff were from around the globe (and some from the region), the APPF Fellows came exclusively from the African continent and included Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zambia.
